A ship from Spain came with donations. Clarín, March 12th, 2002

There are about 300 tons of food and medicine that Mensajeros de la Paz collected. They will be distributed by Caritas and other entities.

Just by chance they arrived at the same time. While the ship Josephine Maerks tied up in the harbour of Buenos Aires, carrying thousands of kilograms of food and medicine donated by faithful Spaniards, the priest that organized in Spain the supportive collection for Argentina, arrived at Ezeiza airport. They hadn’t started unloading the containers of the ship yet, when Father Angel García arrived to the terminal 4 of the harbour: they wanted to personally check the arrival conditions of the donations.

“The most important thing that these containers hold is the love of the Spanish people. This is the demonstration that Spain remembers Argentina”, said Father García. The priest didn’t have access to the containers. He just saw how they put them on trucks and took them to the customs.

It was expected that the Father would arrive in a flight with Iberia Company, before 8 AM, and that the ship would tie up after midday. But the plane was delayed and the ship arrived earlier: both of them arrived in Argentina a little bit after 9. From the airport, the priest and his group- he came with priest José Vicente Rodríguez and other two men- were taken to the hotel in which they will be staying until they return to Spain. Just after getting to the hotel, not having time to take a shower, they headed towards the harbour.

The crisis in Argentina propelled a series of collections in Spain. One of the most active organizations was the one presided by Father García, from Mensajeros de la Paz. According to this organization, there was a collect of almost 300 tons of food and medicine. “There’s plenty of everything… rice, lentils, remedies”, the priest listed.

In the naval prefecture they said that probably in a couple of days, the containers- they are nine in total, seven with food and two with medicine- will be released. “First of all, the custom must control the cargo of the ship and check the containers”, they explained.

Mensajeros de la Paz decided that all the donations will be distributed by Caritas and some other NGOs linked to solidarity matters. “You can be sure that this will go to the people that need it”, the Father said. And he added: “but it will not be enough for everyone that needs it”.

After leaving the harbour, the Father and his group went to take the shower they had been expecting. After that, they had lunch at the Spanish embassy with the Spanish ambassador Manuel Alabart Fernández. Later, the priest went to take his nap.
